Viagra Prescription

The prescription medication Tadalafil is used as a muscle relaxant and to increase blood flow to certain areas of the body.  It may be prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction and symptoms of an enlarged prostate.  It may also be used to treat high blood pressure and to improve the effectiveness of exercise in adults.

Precautions

This medication should never be taken if you’re already taking a nitrate for chest pains.  This can cause a sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure.  You should inform your doctor if you have heart disease or any coronary artery disease, have a history of heart attack or stroke, abnormal blood pressure, liver disease, disease of the kidneys, ulcers, any type of blood cell disorder, or a bleeding disorder.

You should also inform your doctor if you are taking medications for heart or blood pressure problems, antifungal medications, medications for Hepatitis C, any antibiotic, seizure medications, medications for HIV/AIDS, medications for tuberculosis, and St. John’s Wort.  You also want to avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medication, and avoid alcohol.

Side Effects

In some cases Tadalafil can cause a decrease in blood flow to the eyes, which can cause some vision loss.  This is a higher risk factor for those who have a history of heart disease or high blood pressure, or who have diabetes.  It’s also a common risk factor for those who have pre-existing eye problems and for smokers.

A person may also experience chest pain, chills, dizziness or fainting especially upon standing up, irregular heartbeat, headache, nervousness, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, stomach pain, difficulty with speaking, hives, cough, itching, joint or muscle pain, red and sore eyes, rash, or swelling of the feet or lower limbs.  These side effects need immediate medical intervention.

Other common side effects which are not so severe may include upset stomach, heartburn, indigestion, body aches and pains, tingly feeling on the skin, dry eyes, difficulty with swallowing, dry mouth, feeling of warmth, fever, muscle aches, pain in the arms and legs, sleepiness, tearing, and trouble sleeping.  Talk to your doctor if these side effects become unmanageable as he or she may be able to adjust your dosage or prescribe additional medications.

For Erectile Dysfunction

For those prescribed Tadalafil for erectile dysfunction, it’s important to understand how the medication works.  It will not immediately cause an erection but does allow for a sustained erection.  An erection lasting more than four hours should be cause for medical intervention as this can cause long-term damage to the penis.  Never take more than one erectile dysfunction medication unless specifically directed by your doctor.  Always inform your doctor of any side effects during sex such as dizziness or fainting.

Use all medications as directed and never take more than prescribed.  Be sure you ask your doctor about side effects and are aware of the risk factors before taking them.  It’s also good to schedule a checkup before refilling the prescription so you know you have the right dosage.
